But Minerva went to the fair city of Lacedaemon to tell Ulysses' son that he was to return at once.

She found him and Pisistratus sleeping in the forecourt of Menelaus's house;

Pisistratus was fast asleep, but Telemachus could get no rest all night for thinking of his unhappy father, so Minerva went close up to him and said:

As he spoke day began to break, and Menelaus, who had already risen, leaving Helen in bed, came towards them.

In the mean time Telemachus and his crew were nearing land, so they loosed the sails, took down the mast, and rowed the ship into the harbour.

As he spoke he went on board, and bade the others do so also and loose the hawsers, so they took their places in the ship.

But Telemachus bound on his sandals, and took a long and doughty spear with a head of sharpened bronze from the deck of the ship.
